Blog #1 Quiz and Discrimination Videos

The quiz was interesting, and it was fun to hear different accents and voices but thought I would have recognized more than I did. I was aware of the problem of racial discrimination in housing from real estate classes I took. It was a big deal in class and our teachers stressed over and over the importance of never discriminating based on race, whether you base it on their looks, accent etc. not only because it is wrong, but also because there are nasty fees and you can loose your real estate license. Unfortunately there are still people who discriminate, as shown in the video of the man making the same phone call but using different accents. I think people may discriminate based on dialect because they are not familiar with the culture or race of the person they are discriminating against and they fear what is not familiar. I think another reason is that they don't want to stop and take the time to try and learn more about the person or culture or understand them and so they remain ignorant. It really bothers me when people treat others with so much disregard. I think the people in the videos had every reason to be upset, everyone's rights should be respected. While the 20/20 clip's findings were disturbing, I'm glad to see their efforts to make more people aware of this problem in order to stop it!
